The adoption of the prayer taught by Jesus was unanimously voted as the one to be taught to believers by both groups of apostles. [1] At age 15, Jesus formulated the prayer known as “The Lord's Prayer” and taught it to his apostles. [2] Jesus recited the Lord’s Prayer at baptism. [3]
The prayer that Jesus actually composed has interesting differences in some verses with respect to the current prayer. This is Jesus' version: [4]
- Our Father who is in heaven,.
- Hallowed be your name.
- Your kingdom come; your will be done.
- On earth as it is in heaven.
- Give us this day our bread for tomorrow;.
- Refresh our souls with the water of life.
- And forgive us every one our debts.
- As we also have forgiven our debtors.
- Save us in temptation, deliver us from evil,.
- And increasingly make us perfect like yourself.
This is the current prayer, based on the gospels of Matthew and Luke, and ordered according to the previous:
- Our Father, who art in heaven,.
- Hallowed be thy name;.
- Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.
- On earth as it is in heaven.
- Give us this day our daily bread,.
- And forgive us our trespasses,.
- As we forgive those who trespass against us;.
- And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
